Crisis in Stoke-on-Trent's children's services has led to four private companies being shortlisted to take over the running of the department. The DfES intervened to send in advisers late last year when the council's children's services were ranked bottom of all local authorities in the Annual Performance Assessment.

Early Years Professional status is for people who are qualified, with experience. The Government states that in the near future all managers must have a level 4 qualification, so now is the time for managers to gain it. Funding is available and it is not as hard to get as you might think.

Childcarers demand to see workforce review

Childcare campaigners are calling on the Scottish Executive to publish the delayed early years workforce review, after an inquiry found that the 'single most important factor' in improving quality across the sector is upskilling the workforce. Commenting on the publication of the Scottish Parliament's Education Committee's Early Years report (News, 15 June), Patricia Bradley, owner of the Bishopsbriggs Childcare Centre in East Dunbartonshire, said, 'We need an overhaul of the qualifications system and we need to get on with the early years workforce review consultation. In tandem, we need to look at how the private sector affords to pay professional salaries without the Treasury coming up with innovative plans.'

Play should be 'only as safe as necessary'

Play areas should be made 'as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible', according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). Speaking at RoSPA's International Play Safety Conference, 'Ensuring Play Value', play safety manager David Yearley said that playgrounds must be made more adventurous, with an element of controlled risk, if children are to be discouraged from playing in dangerous areas.

The crucial thing about IEPs is that they remain positive, flexible and open to review, as Colette Drifte explains David, aged five, has a behaviour problem and his early years teacher, his mum and David himself, together with the school's Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), have decided on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that is aimed at tackling David's difficulties.
