The crucial thing about IEPs is that they remain positive, flexible and open to review, as Colette Drifte explains David, aged five, has a behaviour problem and his early years teacher, his mum and David himself, together with the school's Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), have decided on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that is aimed at tackling David's difficulties.

What memories from school does the word 'maths' conjure up? My wife and I went to different schools, but have similar memories: endlessly working through Alpha and Beta textbooks. For me this meant maths was a tedious subject, and something to be avoided. My wife had a different view - she loved it! It gave her feelings of security, knowing what to expect, and progressing through the textbooks. We need to give children an enjoyable experience of mathematics at the Foundation Stage, so they are left with a positive impression of the subject. ICT helps them achieve this goal.

Nurseries in Barrow-in-Furness are fighting against costly council plans to make them take out private hire licences for the vehicles they use for pick-ups and drop-offs. The plans would cost them thousands of pounds a year if they go ahead, with settings facing fines or legal action if they do not comply.

'She's more British than cricket, crumpets, Big Ben or the Beatles... She's the English nanny, and when it comes to raising children, there's nothing else quite like her.' From this introduction on, the never-ending appeal of ye olde English nanny is the main selling point of Nanny Wisdom, a new childcare book by two nannies published in the USA. Co-author Kim Nicholson actually grew up in Australia, but both she and English-born Justine Walsh have years of UK experience. What's perhaps more modern about the book's approach is that it comes with celebrity plug, in a foreword written by actor Richard Gere, who employs Justine, and an afterword by fashion photographer Pamela Hanson, Kim's boss.

Early years services are to be amalgated by Highland Council in Scotland following a review that highlighted falling numbers of pre-school children, a consequent reduction in Government funding and a growing demand for wraparound care. Bill Alexander, the council's head of service for children, young people and families, said that the current cost of early years services has exceeded council resources. He predicted that if the number of under-fives continued to decline at a steady rate over the next decade, the level of grant could fall by up to 1.08m.

I am a qualified nursery nurse and I feel strongly that our job in schools should not be downgraded to that of a classroom assistant. I worked hard to gain my qualification and have since gained further qualifications at my own expense and in my own time. I feel there is a place for teachers' aides in schools, but they should be employed as well as nursery nurses, not instead of. But I am aware of qualified nursery nurses who are working as teachers' aides as they are unable to get nursery nurse posts, due to the fact there is not enough money to pay for qualified staff.
