Childcare closures see slow down

One in five childcare providers in England ceased trading last year, but closures have since declined, children's ministerBeverley Hughes said last week. Responding to a question in parliament, Ms Hughes said that over 20 per cent of registered childcare provision had closed in the period from April 2004 to March 2005, compared with 16.7 per cent in the previous financial year.

City nursery school teachers replaced

Nursery school teachers have reacted with dismay to Glasgow City Council's decision to replace the city's 37 nursery school teachers with child development officers. The decision, which was made at the council's 2006/07 budget meeting on 9 February, means nursery school teachers will be removed from their current posts at the end of June.

Special needs code change is welcomed

Organisations representing children and adults who have special needs have welcomed the Government's response to concerns about it's revised Special Educational Needs Code of Practice. Education secretary David Blunkett said he would strengthen the Code of Practice after a public consultation. He said, 'The revised Code will emphasise the need for statements to be clear and specific about a child's educational needs; the provision that will be made to help them learn and progress; and the objectives to be achieved, so schools and parents know what there needs to be done.'

National Childminding Association seminar
