The Busy Bees childcare group has become the second-largest nursery chain in the UK and Ireland following its purchase of Lancashire-based Kindercare Childcare Centres. Busy Bees, which was the fifth largest group listed in the June issue of the Nursery World supplement Nursery Chains, secured 50m funding from private equity house Gresham Trust in 2000. Since then it has bought Copperbeech Day Nurseries, a group based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and Tibbitots Day Nurseries in Lancashire, in addition to a number of other developments. Including Kindercare, this represents an investment of 27m from Gresham over the last two years.

We bought her a bike from GLS to increase her independence. We wanted to show what she could do by herself and what she needed help with. Both help her to be a part of the group.

I was delighted to see so much information about schemas in Nursery World ('All About Schemas', 6 June). It was inspiring and exciting to read about an approach to education that does not try to drum concepts into children, but provides opportunities for them to construct concepts for themselves. The writers obviously value play as the main form of education in pre-school. This should go without saying, now that we have a Foundation Stage curriculum that is play-based. However, it is still common to observe children in pre-school settings being taken away from their play activities to 'do their work'.

Fiona Hamilton-Fairley explains how Remember those warm summer nights, children sitting around the campfire, strumming and singing while enjoying roast marshmallows? Well, sadly our summer seasons are often rather short and wet, but I still think it's a good idea to have a few favourite recipes for outdoor cooking and barbeques at your fingertips. Be equipped for one of those rare moments when the sun is shining and the good weather has at last arrived.
