Fiftieth anniversary celebrations arebeing planned at Greygates Nursery in Muswell Hill, north London. The nursery was started by Hazell Braddock in 1954 and has been run by her daughter, Denise Hopkins, since the 1970s. Some staff have worked there for more than 20 years. Mrs Hopkins said, 'We would love as many people as possible who attended the nursery as children and former staff to get in touch so that they can join us for our golden anniversary celebrations in June.' By Judith Hadley, who runs out-of-school, breakfast and holiday clubs in the Bristol area I cannot speak strongly enough for the rights of children to have the best possible care, so I was astounded to hear that the Government is considering the effective deregulation of some childcare, and that nannies and after-school clubs will not need to be regulated. A Treasury spokeswoman said this was 'to make it as easy as possible for carers to be accredited while ensuring the safeguarding of quality', while the Department for Education and Skills said the new 'light touch' voluntary accreditation scheme was being created to give more financial support to parents paying for childcare (News, 25 March).

Play Wales to revise playwork values

Play Wales, the national organisation for play in Wales, is carrying out a UK-wide consultation on proposals to revise the playwork values and assumptions that inform playwork training. The review has been funded by the Welsh Assembly and backed by the main play organisations nationwide. Gill Evans of Play Wales said that the Department for Education and Skills has indicated that it will consider feeding in the results of the consultation to the current review of the National Occupational Standards for playwork and early years education.
