Case study: Mary

Mary started nursery when she was two years and one month old. Her mother had recently had twins, so both she and the father were busy with the care of these new family members. At first, Mary was a bit shy of the children in the nursery, but settled quite quickly and began to play alongside other children. However, it was not long before Mary showed signs of being very possessive, and whenever another child had a toy she would try to pull it away, often biting the child to instant effect. Mary's mother told the nursery staff that this was not new; in fact, Mary had been biting since early on in her pregnancy with the twins. She had tried all sorts of things to stop it, but to no avail. She was very worried that Mary was becoming attention-seeking and so had tried to ignore it, but ignoring it only seemed to make it worse.

I applaud and encourage any early years setting which fosters individual children's independence and autonomy ('All by myself', 17 June). Maria Montessori first saw the need to observe children and build on their interests and skills in 1907 when she opened the first Children's House in Rome. Since then, children in Montessori schools all over the world have been following her essential principle of 'help me to do it myself'.

Rather than recommending specific models it will be more use to provide a list of the features you are likely to need. So, to summarise: * For all cameras, you will need a built-in automatic flash, and a non-zoom camera will provide good results more consistently because it has one less extra control for small people to master.

Learning through play is blossoming at Kew Gardens in London's newest interactive playground. 'Climbers and Creepers', designed for children from three to nine, has just opened and will keep them coming back for more long after summer is over. Children can get eaten by a giant Venus Fly Trap and climb inside a huge fragrant flower to pollinate it like a bee, after crawling through the prickly bramble patch and resisting the inedible green berries. Children are admitted free at Kew with a paying adult.
