Nursery nurses walk out

Nursery nurse members of the public services union Unison took part in a three-day programme of strike action across Scotland last week, demanding a review and regrading of their jobs. The action started on Tuesday in Glasgow and the west of Scotland, where around 2,500 nursery nurses went on strike. They were joined by 2,000 more strikers from the east and north of Scotland on Wednesday, and returned to work on Thursday and Friday respectively.

Medical, legal and child protection experts from around the world met in Edinburgh last week to discuss strategies to ensure better diagnosis and public education about Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS). The European Conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome was supported by a range of organisations including the police, the NSPCC, and the Royal Society of Medicine, and sponsored by the American agency the National Centre on Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Child psychologist Jennie Lindon answers your letters about child behaviour. Q Like many nurseries we are an all-female staff. Recently we have been pleased to have a male teenager on placement from the local secondary school. The children, especially the boys, were enthusiastic about his visits. We had hoped that he would help motivate the more energetic boys towards interest in books and activities that would help them to concentrate better. But he has been more comfortable in boisterous play with the children, and we have had to set some boundaries for safety.
