Following the news story 'Ofsted acts on childminders' (12 September), I am writing to clarify the position on the law relating to unregistered childminders, as the first two paragraphs of the story are inaccurate. The law is clear - no person shall act as a childminder unless they are registered by the chief inspector. Again defined in law, to 'act as childminder' means looking after one or more children under the age of eight years on domestic premises for reward. It is therefore unlawful to act as a childminder in England without being registered with Ofsted.

It's September, and I don't know about you, but this month always feels like the start of a new year for me. It must be the lifelong impression that our schooldays make. It's time to make a fresh start, get your mind into gear and look forward to learning new things or thinking about old ones with a more experienced viewpoint. This issue of Professional Nanny should offer plenty of food for thought on what is the core subject of nannying -children!It looks at how children's time is most comfortably managed, how nannies and parents should divide their responsibilities, what one experienced nanny recommends for keeping children happy through the day, and what popular childcare books have to say. If you worked in a nursery or school you'd probably have a chance at what's called 'continuing professional development' and get sent on courses or given extra duties. But as a nanny, unless you've got one of those enlightened employers who pay for you to go on a first aid course, you have to teach yourself. Next month we'll look at how to keep your skills and CV up to date - and every month we'll try to help you keep learning!

Have you been wanting to get out and stretch your legs in the countryside but thought it would be too difficult with children in tow? A series of walkers' guides has been designed with children in mind. Jarrold Short Walks for All the Family are pocket-sized books directing you along the routes of walks in different areas around England, from 'short and easy' at under two miles, to 'more challenging' at five miles and over. They tell you how long each walk is likely to take, whether it's pushchair-navigable and whether you'll need your wellies, where to park and what sights to see, with titbits of local history and a question for older children to answer about some point of interest on the way. Each route is shown on a section of the Ordnance Survey map. The guides are available in bookshops and tourist information centres, price 5.95 - and Professional Nanny has five copies of the guide for the Chilterns, north-west of London, to give away free. Just in time for the autumn leaves and the half-term holiday. Send your name and address on a postcard marked 'Walks' to Professional Nanny at the address on page three and the first five out of the bobble hat on 10 October win.

Young children can learn to show tolerance and embrace differences when early years settings have carefully examined their own attitudes and practices, says Lynne Harvey We are reminded early in Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage that 'Practitioners should plan to meet the needs of both boys and girls, children with special needs, children who are more able, children with disabilities, children from all cultural and religious backgrounds, children of different ethnic groups including travellers, refugees and asylum seekers, and children from diverse linguistic backgrounds' (page 17).

While the good weather continues, it's great to get outside for a picnic lunch. But instead of sandwiches and crisps, how about a themed do? Here's an idea for a pirate afternoon which mixes activities and food. Involve children in planning the picnic from the start. They can help make pirate costumes, such as an eye patch by tying two lengths of string to a small piece of black card, or silver shoe buckles by covering card with tin foil. Now just put on a pair of long socks, carry a cardboard sword, and they're ready to hit the high seas.

Does the glut of popular advice on childcare have anything to teach nannies? Gayle Goshorn has a read. Back in the 1980s there was a hit TV series about unemployment called Boys from the Blackstuff, which gave the nation the catchphrase 'I can do that!'
