Three London councils merge to cut costs

Westminster, Hammersmith & Fulham, and Kensington & Chelsea councils are to merge services from February 2011, generating savings of between 50m and 100m a year.
According to a joint statement from the leaders of the three councils, the move is designed to protect front-line services and to ensure a high standard by sharing council services. They also revealed plans to focus on a few major areas where sharing and merging services is viable and plans to set up a series of working groups to develop and study options for three main areas, including family services.
