In Bishop's House Early Years Centre (Kennington, London) the team have considered carefully how to help babies and very young children to feel secure. Janice Smith (centre manager) and Lorraine Slade (acting deputy manager) explain that children's sense of security is supported through developing good partnership with parents. 'If you can make the parents feel comfortable, then the child will feel secure. You need to support parents' feelings about their baby or child attending your centre.' Partnership between the centre and parents begins with a home visit that helps to create continuity between a baby's care at home and their time in the centre. The staff gather information about the baby or toddler's care. As Janice and Lorraine say, 'It's the little things that matter most, like a child's special blanket or that we follow a feeding routine that's familiar.'

'If I look at my childminder, I may have a teacher of the future, I may have a nursery manager, I may have an engineer. What we have got to offer people who come into this industry is the opportunity to develop their qualifications' Catherine Ashton, early years minister, speaking to the Education and Skills select committee 'I want to produce something that will survive long beyond us, which we can point to as part of this Parliament and say, "We started that here. We have a proper integrated support for families which supports children and their mums and dads to enable them to do what they want".'

A system that ignores witnesses

Further to the news story about the NSPCC's Full Stop campaign, (7 March), I would like to point out that childcare providers do indeed report instances of child abuse to the appropriate authorities. In my job as a day nursery manager I once witnessed a physical assault by a father on his young daughter when he came to collect her from the nursery. She accidentally stepped on his toe and out of anger he kicked her on the leg in front of two other adult witnesses, as well as several children and myself. I reported the incident to the local social services child protection unit but all that happened was the parent, who holds a responsible job, was told not to 'play' that way with his child again.

Recently I became a nanny after four years of working as a nursery nurse, though I still work at a day nursery while the child is at school. I am part of a nanny circle and was shocked to discover that only two out of the bunch have been policed-checked. That is not to say I do not trust the others or feel they have something to hide, but as a nursery nurse I saw police-checking as standard practice.

Happy birthday

Cut out the problems in celebrating children's birthdays at nursery with cake by switching to this strategy devised by Mary Whiting As recent letters to Nursery World have shown, celebrations involving birthday cakes can be problematical. I once worked in a setting where parents brought in birthday cakes. Some were elaborately decorated, sometimes covered in cream (real or synthetic) and all manner of coloured bits and bobs; some were cheap 'long shelf-life' versions. Few were homemade. The practice created a range of problems, including competitiveness. Once, two cakes arrived on the same day: one was a spectacular, professionally iced affair that the children excitedly clustered round, the other a nice-looking, homemade sponge cake, which got barely a glance.
