Primary school children at out-of-school clubs could call the tune with Come and Play, a two-year music initiative run by Kids' Clubs Network and funded by Youth Music which has worked with almost 2,000 children at 70 out-of-school clubs across the UK since it was launched in March. The initiative seeks to involve children, especially those who live in disadvantaged areas, in workshops led by experienced musicians that explore rhythm, sound and tempo as well as the instruments and musical traditions of different cultures. Anne Longfield, chief executive of KCN, said, 'By bringing musicians and children together, Come and Play gives children the opportunity to become confident about making music in a more relaxed environment than the traditional formal school settting.' For details contact Ally Parsons at KCN on 020 75226903 or see www.kidsclubs.org.uk/comeandplay.

David Cameron's recent turn to domestic policy with his 'Can Parent' classes is to be welcomed. Repositioning parenting classes as support for all, rather than a penalty for 'poor parents' is a good first step to encourage uptake. The next will be to ensure the service reaches the vulnerable, as well as the proactive.

Two new voluntary aided schools in Wales were among 11 building projects announced last week by Welsh Assembly education minister Jane Davidson. Primary schools at Pontypool and Abersychan are to be completely rebuilt, while a 13-place nursery at St David's Church in Wales Primary in Colwinston in the Vale of Glamorgan has been given the go-ahead under the Voluntary Aided Schools Capital Grant Programme. There are 161 voluntary aided schools in Wales and the Assembly is supporting nearly 100 projects through an annual budget of 9.5m. Ms Davidson said the building works demonstrated the Assembly's commitment to give parents choice in education. She added, 'It also recognises the important role that church schools - Church in Wales and Roman Catholic - have in educating children in Wales. The new programme is another step towards our goal that all school buildings should be in good physical condition and properly maintained by 2010.'

An inspection could be like a scene from a horror film, or it could go like a dream, says Mairi Maciver Clark When Alfred Hitchcock shot the 'Psycho' scene with Janet Leigh in the shower, little did he know the empathy that would be felt for that woman by nursery owners and managers.
