Childcare closures treble on last year

Three times as many childcare places closed in 2004-05 as in the previous year, according to figures released by children's minister Beverley Hughes. During a debate on the Childcare Bill in the House of Commons last week, shadow childcare minister Paul Goodman cited statistics Ms Hughes had provided in a written answer, which showed that in 2004-05 the number of full daycare places closed was 65,577, up from 7,627 in 2003-04, while last year she said 72,222 out-of- school and 62,972 childminding places were closed.

Nursery school staff are being asked to join other professionals in keeping a watchful eye out for children whose parents are drug addicts in a draft national strategy, Getting Our Priorities Right, published by the Scottish Executive this month. Launching the document, deputy education minister Nicol Stephen said, 'Drug abuse destroys lives, and children are often the most damaged. This guidance provides a way forward for services across Scotland working together.'

Glasgow City Council's education services committee is considering introducing a new integrated model of education for under-12s at a meeting today (September 27). The committee will discuss a report which proposes ending the distinctions between the pre-school, primary and special educational needs sectors and creating seamless provision for all children between three and 12, either on one 'campus' or a closely-connected family of sites.

Children at Kinder Park Nursery in Carlisle get switched on to ICT with the new equipment they won in a competition run by FirstSteps and Nursery World. Nursery owner Joanne Routledge said she was delighted with the prize after a particularly difficult year. The nursery was closed for refurbishment for seven months after being severely damaged by flooding. Ms Routledge said, 'We've taken a few knocks, so it's wonderful to have Kinder Park fully functioning again. Winning the laptop was the icing on the cake. We had already been considering installing a management software system for a while.'

Recruitment and training issues shadowed the Government's revelations of plans for its Sure Start unit, which is overseeing work in early years, childcare and Sure Start in England. At a conference in Westminster last week, education and skills secretary Charles Clarke spoke to delegates about the interdepartmental unit, which has brought together the Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Work and Pensions. Mr Clarke said, 'Sure Start will help local authorities provide joined-up services to ensure that every child receives the best start in life, with targeted support directed at areas where it is most needed.'

Three- and four-year-olds at Ardgowan nursery in Paisley have been keeping their eye on the ball in a series of sessions introducing them to the beautiful game. Nursery owner Patricia Gourley said, 'David Longwell, the youth coach from St Mirren's Football Club, comes in once a week and spends half an hour with the three-year-olds and half an hour with the four-year-olds. The coach has never done it with children this young, but he says the kids are brilliant and now they're joining weekend classes and taking it up as a hobby.

Twenty-six members of the Kinder Group's 'Five-year Staff Club', who between them have 226 years of service to the Maidstone-based nursery chain, celebrated with a supper and a visit to a performance of the musical 'Fame!' at Canterbury's Marlowe Theatre. The nursery chain, which has eight nurseries and five out-of-school clubs in Kent, said it put its high level of staff retention down to the fact that the average age of its staff is 30 and the settings' 'rewarding, family atmosphere'.

Modern apprentices get new framework

A new framework for Modern Apprentices in early years childcare and education, incorporating a technical certificate, has been approved by the Learning and Skills Council and endorsed by leading training providers. The new framework was unveiled last week by CACHE, which has run a scaled-down version of the Early Years National Training Organisation since last April. From February Modern Apprentices will also have 20 hours of guided learning on their employment rights and responsibilities through a module developed by the EYNTO.
