This time last year children at the Fun Factory out-of-school club, based at Park Place Primary School in Dundee, looked out on a sea of concrete, the only splash of colour being the litter blown across from neighbouring flats. Now their outdoor space has been transformed, thanks to a year-long project that saw co-ordinator Valerie Lynch lead the children and staff in the creation of a fabulous multicultural garden. She said, 'I wanted to create a welcoming space that would reflect outside the school what is happening inside.'

The rollout of childcare in and around extended schools is one of the most important changes in child and family policy and in education this country has seen in more than 50 years. For the first time we will have national childcare provision, with the Childcare Bill giving local authorities the statutory responsibility to ensure that childcare for 0-14/16-year-olds is available locally to meet the needs of parents. In volume and reach terms the Bill is revolutionary, but to truly improve outcomes for children a focus on quality must be built in and be of equal priority as a rollout of places.

(Photograph) - A dozen volunteers from Walker Morris law firm in Leeds swapped their suits for painters' overalls to help transform the outside play area at Rose Farm Early Learning Centre in Rothwell. The workers tidied the garden, painted murals on the walls and created cycle paths. The link between Rose Farm centre and Walker Morris was arranged by the employee volunteering initiative Leeds Cares.
