Your letter of the week about having grandmothers on the nursery staff (Nursery World, 13 January) raised a laugh in our office on a Friday afternoon, but it also made my blood boil. What blatant stereotyping! I am a grandmother and yes, I knit and I can play dominoes, but I'd hope to bring a lot more to my granddaughter's playgroup than that.

High levels of activity in the day nursery market have been reported by property agent Dowling Kerr. Its business development manager Andre Coulter said, 'Business sales in June were extremely active. At the present time we are dealing with more than 75 nurseries across the UK. Excellent prices are being achieved and generally prices have increased over the past 12 to 18 months due to the "feelgood factor" within the industry, reinforced by a strong and buoyant property market and the availability of excellent financing packages which allow existing business people within the industry to refinance and expand.' Recent sales include the Little Acorns Nursery in Ealing, London, marketed for 250,000 leasehold and sold to Toad Hall nursery group in early June; the Lilliput Farm Day Nursery in Sandbach, Cheshire, a period property sold for an undisclosed figure based on an asking price of 485,000 freehold; and the Piccolo Nursery in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, put on the market for 205,000 leasehold.

Additional copies of a training resource to help nursery workers support children's speech and language development are now available. Around 10,000 early years settings have already received an ICANTALK! pack, developed by the charity ICAN. The pack contains a video, booklet, poster and information on where to seek advice and support for children with language difficulties. It received an enthusiastic response from playgroup supervisor Fiona Wheeler of Stockton Lane Playgroup in Leeds. She said, 'I think simple activities like this are really effective in extending children's vocabulary. It also gives them the confidence to say something in a group, and they enjoy it too.' The pack costs 49.50, but Nursery World readers could win one free. Details of the competition are on page 14. Contact info@ican.org.uk or phone 0845 225 4071 for more information.

Surrey-based playgroup manager Nikki Gray, 46, signed up for Liverpool Hope's BA Nursery Management degree in 2002 after reading about the course in the press. She has two more years to complete before graduating. 'I'd always wanted to study for a degree and this course seemed ideal because it developed management skills that were relevant to the job I was already doing,' she explains. 'E-learning suited me perfectly because, as a single parent with three children, there was no way I could attend a campus based course - and certainly not one in Liverpool.'
