Education minister Cathy Jamieson has stressed the importance of local authorities working in partnership with the private and voluntary sectors in providing childcare services, in the wake of early difficulties with the approach. Speaking during a visit to First Step Community Nursery in Hamilton, North Lanarkshire, Ms Jamieson said, 'Parents and their children have diverse needs, and local authorities and their partners have been flexible in meeting them. The importance of partnerships cannot be stressed too strongly. I encourage local authorities to continue working with the private and voluntary sectors in providing high-quality services.'

* Sandy Bell brings nursing and childcare experience to her role as North West Lancashire Childcare Co-ordinator, covering approximately 19,000 NHS staff in Blackpool, Preston and Chorley. She worked as an auxiliary nurse for 22 years and ran a holiday playscheme for eight years after seeing staff struggling to organise childcare. 'Fingers crossed, so far we've been able to solve all the childcare problems that staff have come with,' she says. 'Most parents are wanting out-of-school care for their children, including before and after school and holiday schemes. It seems they have more childcare problems once their children go to school because of NHS shift patterns.'

Interim head to guide Daycare Trust
