State competition forces chain closures

Five settings in the UK's largest nursery chain have been earmarked for closure because of 'increased competition from Government programmes'. In a statement last week, Leapfrog Day Nurseries, which owns 98 settings, said it was proposing to close Cheshire Oaks, Kettering Millbrook, Birmingham Bristol Road, Swindon Abbey Meads and Gloucester nurseries on 30 September.

How one child blossomed outdoors is described by Foundation Stage regional adviser Dr Andrew Lockett for the Celebrating Young Children project Jayden has just completed his first year in Key Stage 1 at Ashbrow Community Nursery and Infant School, Kirklees. Foundation Stage teacher Fiona Cullivan Ward recalls that Jayden joined their unit having attended sessions of 'Stay and Play' at the children's centre.

Eco-classroom makes space more flexible

A 220,000 project to create an eco-classroom for Year Two at Stanley Infant and Nursery School in Richmond on Thames has won planning permission. The pioneering design is the result of a collaboration between construction company Framework CDM and architects Mark Dudek Associates. The project had to be functional and affordable and cause the least possible disruption to both the school and its environment.
