Taking an 'ultra-careful' approach has led to Aberdeenshire having the highest number of children referred for inquiries into suspected abuse in Scotland, according to Aberdeenshire Council. Child protection figures released by the Scottish Executive show the county had 712 referrals in the year to 31 March last year - more than Glasgow and Edinburgh, both with 647. Aberdeen City had 252 referrals and Dundee 156. Aberdeenshire Council said potential risks to children are identified early on through close co-operation between the council, police and health agencies. Actual inquiries numbered 103 and 81 children were eventually placed on the child protection register, proportionally more in line with the area's population.
