Expanding integrated early years services for vulnerable young children in deprived communities should be a priority for the new Changing Children's Services Fund, the Scottish Executive said in a consultation paper published last week. Other proposed objectives include advice and support for parents of such vulnerable children and support packages for those with disabilities or special physical, emotional or educational needs. The consultation seeks views on the Executive's proposals for allocating the Fund, and other suggestions.

(Photograph) - Young musicians from Nunu Day Nursery in Cheshire get ready to record the vocals for their new CD, a compilation of original songs and rhymes written by their pre-school teacher, Natasha Melbon. Using her Masters degree in music, Natasha has developed a unique method of supporting creative expression. She said, 'Once I've written the music, the children use their imaginations, respond to experiences and express and communicate their ideas by introducing themes and lyrics.' The CD features the Nunu anthem, which is sung each year at the children's 'graduation' ceremony.

I applaud Julian Grenier's article 'Mark my words' (1 February), for I feel strongly that children are being institutionalised too young and that somehow the importance of play and its significance in the development of pre-school children has been pushed aside. I totally agree that worksheet-based teaching not only fails to extend children's thinking, but it also does not allow them to draw on their experiences. An activity based on the rhyme 'Five little speckled frogs', for example, where the children are able to act out the song using toy frogs - which enables them to understand the concepts of counting to five and backwards - is far more likely to be remembered and understood than colouring in a worksheet that has five frogs on.
