The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment in Northern Ireland has published the results of its consultation, 'Towards a framework for early learning', which was launched in March 2004. The document states that to be effective, the new curriculum for children from birth to six years old 'must be grounded in the realities, the challenges and complexities of early childhood care in Northern Ireland'. Children at Great Ormond Street Hospital dressed for the occasion on Jeans for Genes day on 4 October. The annual campaign, led by the famous children's hospital in London, has raised more than 24m for genetic research into children's illnesses since it began in 1996. This year TSL Education, publisher of Nursery World, contributed 280.

Footballer kicks new life into playground

A London adventure playground has benefited from a 150,000 makeover, thanks to the hard work of former football star Ian Wright and his friends. The transformation of Hayward Adventure Playground in the London borough of Islington, run by disabled children's charity Kids, will feature in the television programme 'With a little help from my friends' on Saturday 2 July (ITV1, 6.30pm). The TVnetwork paid for the makeover.

Childcare has become a major political issue in Ireland in recent weeks after the Fianna Fail-led government suffered two by-election defeats in the greater Dublin area, where it emerged as a major voter concern. This has focused attention on government's failure to stimulate the supply of childcare places to meet the growing demands of working families. A study by the Central Statistics Office found that 40,000 women joined the workforce last year, but 17,600 of them work part-time, many because of the lack of childcare.

* Building work has begun on a new children's centre at North Fawdon Primary School in Fawdon, Newcastle upon Tyne. Sure Start North Moor Children's Centre will cost 800,000 and is due to be completed in Spring 2006. The centre will provide a range of facilities including full daycare for 22 children, a creche, and flexible community and outdoor space.

Toddle waddle

The Meningitis Trust Toddle Waddle is a sponsored walk for the under- fives. Every year over 50,000 children join their parents and carers to toddle, waddle, skip, hop and jump and raise much-needed funds to support the fight against meningitis. Last year the Trust raised 355,000 and over the last five years toddlers have waddled their way towards an incredible 1.3m.

I am amazed at the response from many childcare workers to the letters in Nursery World about parents. Surely we need to be seeking out what is best for the child. While we can all recount situations where there have been elements of neglect, what is more important is that we put the child first. Sometimes that means not projecting our own methods of parenting and trying to empathise with the 101 demands that are placed on parents.

'Raise tax credits to reach parents'

The level of Working Tax Credit (WTC) paid to parents should be raised to help tackle the chronic shortage of affordable childcare places in some areas, a London local authority says. The London Borough of Camden launched a campaign called Families Need Childcare last week to press for more ring-fenced revenue funding so that other local authorities can create more affordable places, in advance of chancellor Gordon Brown's Budget on 17 March.
