The Australian-based childcare giant ABC Learning Centres, which recently acquired Leapfrog nurseries in the UK (News, 23 August) and is the parent company of Busy Bees, has announced record profits of $143.1m Australian dollars, a rise of 76 per cent on the previous year. ABC is the largest provider of childcare in Australia and New Zealand and the second largest childcare provider in the United States.

I have worked as a nursery nurse for more than six years and have extensive experience in working with children. I have decided to further my career by training to be an early years teacher, which will take me four years to complete. I think it is incredibly unfair that there is not another route for nursery nurses to enter teaching. Many people who have a degree but have never worked with children before are now able to teach after attending a PGCE course for ten months.

The out-of-school workforce has always been made up of people from a wide range of backgrounds. Some of those have trained and worked with young children in the early years, some are youth workers, some playworkers, some work in the school as support staff during the day, others are specialist art or sports workers. But this diversity also means that the workforce hasn't always quite fitted with the structures that have been in place. Diversity isn't always neat - and the out-of-school workforce has often struggled to work within the myriad professional boxes. But things are changing. What was once a limitation to those working in the field is now set to be a major strength. In the drive to build an integrated workforce to meet the challenges of delivering joined-up services, out-of-school workers are way out in front.

In Brief: Edinburgh City councillors scrap plans

Plans to close more than 20 schools and nurseries were officially scrapped by Edinburgh City councillors at a meeting held last week. A motion put forward by a Labour and Green Party coalition was voted through in less than 15 minutes. Full-time nursery places remain under threat, as the council is pushing ahead with plans to cut 1,054 places to 700 between December and April next year.

A girl came up to me in the nursery and asked, 'How do you kiss a turtle?' I was surprised and a bit worried. First, because she wanted to know how to kiss one, and second, because, out of all the staff, she felt that I was most likely to know!
