A daily supplement of omega-3 fish oil can reduce hyperactivity in children more effectively than commonly prescribed drugs, new research suggests. An Australian study measured the effects of eye q, a supplement of omega-3 fish oil and omega-6 evening primrose oil, on 132 children with ADHD. For 15 weeks the children were split, with one group taking eye q and another a placebo. Then, for a further 15 weeks, all took eye q.

Georgie Bateman, who runs the Night Nannies franchise in Hampshire and Wiltshire, is now launching an extra service called Nannies for Grannies. When grandchildren come to stay for a few days, a nanny can arrive at 9pm and deal with bathtime, bedtime and night-time requests. The idea came from Georgie's own mum, who sometimes cares for Georgie's girls Annabel and Louisa. 'Many grandparents want to give their children a weekend off, but are worried they won't know what to do,' says Georgie. 'And after spending the whole day entertaining a young child they feel exhausted.'

'It is scandalous that the Government has ignored the view of virtually every child protection and health professional in the country. The Dickensian idea of reasonable chastisement has no place in a modern civilised society. Children should enjoy the same legal protection from being hit as adults. Anything less puts them at risk.' Mary Marsh, director of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children

Will the structure of the Early Years Foundation Stage, asks Ruth Thomson, encourage the very practice that it is seeking to eliminate? If one message is made clear in the opening sections to the Government's proposals for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), then it is this: checklists of activities for babies and topic-driven provision for older children will have no place in the proposed framework. In their place must come responsive, flexible provision, built around the needs and interests of the individual child and delivered through a cycle of observation, assessment and planning.

Parents may resort to smacking as they negotiate the maze of teaching children how to behave. Jenny Mosley and Ross Grogan show how to suggest other routes Q The parents of one of my charges smack him when he is naughty. This is not in an abusive way but, as a childminder, I firmly believe there are better ways to discipline a child. I would like to discuss other techniques with them but am unsure what to suggest.
