The National Day Nurseries Association is currently conducting a survey of its 1,000 members on the impact of Working Families Tax Credit on their businesses. The survey is seeking to find out how many parents are paying for childcare using the childcare tax credit element of the tax credit, whether or not it has made any difference in the uptake and also if nurseries have experienced difficulties such as fraud or no payment of fees since the tax credit's introduction in October 1999. The full results of the survey are expected to be published later this month.

New duties on racial equality warning for early

Early years providers have been warned to be aware that last year's amendment to the Race Relations Act will place a duty on many of them to promote racial equality. The 2000 Amendment followed the Macpherson report and inquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Whereas the 1976 Race Relations Act made it illegal to discriminate on the grounds of race in the delivery of services, the amendment creates a positive duty on public bodies to work towards racial equality.

The steep rise was revealed last week in written evidence submitted by the Care Commission to the Scottish Parliament's Education Committee as part of its ongoing early years inquiry.

Disability experts have voiced concern over the Government's decision to defer funding on a proposed flagship early intervention centre for disabled children. Mencap's feasibility study on the National Centre for Early Excellence, which was commissioned by the DfES and presented to ministers in March 2005, was released to the public last week following pressure from the sector and a Freedom of Information request.

Jobless help fill gaps in city childcare

A childcare project in Glasgow that supports the long-term unemployed is embarking on a rapid expansion programme. Over the past year, Childcare Works has helped train over 200 people to gain childcare qualifications at SVQ level 2 and 60 have gone on to permanent jobs in childcare. The scheme is run by development organisation CEiS.

This fundraising challenge has been organised by Baby Lifeline, a charity that campaigns for better maternity services across the UK.
