Careshare Nurseries in Scotland has been named Small Company of the Year following the group's acquisition of three new nurseries. It won in the Company Excellence category at the Deals and Dealmakers Awards 2002, which were organised by the business publication Scottish Business Insider. The awards have been created to recognise and reward corporate finance expertise and its contribution to the Scottish economy.

The cost of placing a child under two in a day nursery in England has risen by almost 5 per cent in the past 12 months, according to research by the Daycare Trust. The Trust's 2004 survey of childcare costs, published earlier this week, found that average day nursery fees have risen by more than inflation for the third year running, from 128 a week in 2003 to 134 a week now - almost 7,000 a year. In London and the south-east, a nursery place costs around 168 a week.

While some out-of-school clubs have never needed to raise funds, others are struggling to survive. Simon Vevers looks at why funding arrangements mean some clubs face closure and how this will affect future expansion There were a few hundred after-school clubs in the late 1980s but dramatic expansion has resulted in the numbers topping 10,000 and continuing to climb. A target of 20,000 clubs by 2010 is reachable, given the necessary political will and finance, according to a report from the Kids' Club Network (KCN) and HSBC Bank.

NOF grants for Scottish, Irish clubs

Out-of school provision in Northern Ireland and Scotland has benefited from the latest round of grants from the New Opportunities Fund announced at the end of August. In Northern Ireland, the final announcement of the Out of school hours childcare grants programme has seen 1.3m awarded to 16 projects creating more than 1,300 childcare places. This brings the total invested since 1999 to more than 9.2m to create 13,800 childcare places across the country. The awards were made to projects in Belfast, Armagh, Omagh, Fermanagh, Cookstown, Coleraine, Ballymoney and Craigavon.
