In reply to the letter regarding a parent who did not wish a male nursery worker to change her child (23 June), this seems a simple matter of equality of opportunity in employment. If the setting were to treat this worker any differently to his colleagues because of his sex, they would be breaking employment law. If the setting has an equal opportunities policy, it should include staff as well as children. There should be a contract with parents which they sign to indicate their acceptance of such policies. This would make the position clear for all .

Children and young people in England are leading the way in social conscience by demonstrating that it's 'cool to care', children's charity 4Children said this week. Findings from 4Children's survey My Ideal World, launched by former children's minister Margaret Hodge on Monday, revealed that young people were more interested in progress on poverty, climate change and putting an end to world conflict than getting more pocket money or having the freedom to live without rules.

Vegetarian campaigners have hit out at the use of fish oil, found in recent trials to improve children's behaviour and concentration, claiming that fish oil supplements contain high levels of potentially toxic chemicals that could endanger health. The Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation says that pollutants such as dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can accumulate in the fatty parts of fish which are then used to manufacture fish oil supplements.

The Institute of Education 1902-2002: A Centenary History, by Professor Richard Aldrich, tells how it was founded as the London Day Training College to provide teachers for the city's elementary schools, then became a college of the University of London and an international postgraduate centre for educational research.

* Just Learning, the UK's third-largest nursery chain, has bought First Steps Day Nursery in Colchester, Essex. First Steps is a purpose-built nursery with 139 childcare places and a wide range of facilities including a soft play room, ball pool area and a vegetable patch. The new nursery will be known as Just Learning Colchester and brings the total number of settings owned by Just Learning to 67. Michael Fallon, the company's managing director, has reassured parents that it is 'not planning any substantial changes'.
