Children as young as six are being trained in anger management techniques so they can act as mentors to their fellow pupils, preventing playground disputes flaring out of control or bullying. The peer-mentoring scheme was pioneered three years ago by Nesta Murray, headteacher at St Ann's Primary School in Tottenham, London. It is now operating in seven other schools in the area. Ms Murray said, 'It has been very successful and made a big difference to our school. You have to continuously update your behavioural management techniques, and we have tried many anger management techniques over the years, but they were all top down approaches.

Outdoor provision is high on the early years agenda at the moment, as the huge number of entries to our Outdoor Challenge, run with Learning Through Landscapes, confirmed. As part of our work with LTL, Nursery World was a member of a specially convened group which met to discuss what the early years vision for outdoors play should be and how that should be expressed in terms of a set of values. So we're really pleased this week to provide you with a lovely Nursery World/LTL poster setting out the vision and values and including a wonderful set of images depicting the special nature of outdoor play. We hope you will all display this in your settings and incorporate the values in developing your outside provision.

Having read Martin Pace's 'In my view' (18 March), I must say that I am in total agreement with his enthusiasm for the Reggio Emilia approach. I also attended the UK presentation led by educational consultants Linda Thornton and Pat Brunton that was held by Bracknell Forest Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership. I was fortunate that they extended their already long day to visit our neighbourhood nursery, the Family Tree.

A new organisation to represent nanny agencies has arisen out of a meeting last month to discuss the Government's latest rules on recruitment. Agencies at a forum held by the Professional Association of Nursery Nurses voiced dismay that the new regulations are not as strong as they would like, and that nanny agencies have too little support or means to share information. The Association of Nanny Agencies is starting out on a voluntary basis, with free membership open to all. Initially it will be administered by PANN, where those interested can contact professional officer Tricia Pritchard on 01332 372 337.

Maggie Mellon, NCH head of public policy said, 'When it was set up it was clearly intended to deal with children involved in offending and anti-social behaviour.
