Having gained a degree in Early Childhood Studies and spent time in Sweden observing their educational system, I undertook a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). I have been a Reception teacher for the past three years and although I am confident and highly principled, I still find the top down pressure from SATs frustrating and soul destroying. The PGCE was a total contradiction of my degree. It was more concerned with 'what and when' to teach as opposed to how children learn and creating an effective learning environment.

Unfair criticism

I just want to say that we teachers don't deserve the resentment of school support staff. We know that they should get paid more for the work that they do, but this is not our fault. I work more than double the hours that my colleague, a nursery nurse, does, both at home and after the nursery session. If our salaries were compared by the hourly rate, I am sure I would probably be earning less than she does.

Speaking at the launch of a new report, A Child's Place: why environment matters to children, Mr Clarke acknowledged that the report raises a 'whole string of issues which are complicated and difficult', in relation to children's relationship with their environment.

Three-year-old Tilly Lockey from Beechdale Nursery in Consett, County Durham, shows off her new hands. Tilly contracted meningitis as a baby and had both hands and her toes amputated. Her family raised 100,000 to get her the battery-powered prosthetic hands, which allow Tilly to carry out any activity a three-year-old with real hands would do.

A local authority that refused to let a private daycare provider administer the nursery education grant on the grounds that it wanted three- and four-year-olds to take up surplus places in the maintained sector has been condemned by the Government. Knowsley Council on Merseyside told Lorraine Moorcroft that the Hunts Cross facility she opened in Halewood last year would not qualify for the nursery education grant. She already operates the grant at another nursery in Knowsley and one at Huyton in Liverpool.
