(Photograph) - Children got a whiff of the outdoor classroom at the opening of the newly relocated Growing Schools Garden at London's Greenwich Environmental Curriculum Centre. The opening on 11 June launched National School Grounds Week, run by the charity Learning Through Landscapes. Schools minister Stephen Twigg came along to praise the garden for offering 'a uniquely rich and rewarding outdoor learning experience', and said, 'It is vital that we engage young people through a creative and stimulating curriculum.'

Few childminders taking up grants

Asustainability grant scheme to help childminders living in deprived areas in England has been only a limited success, a report for the Department for Education and Skills has revealed. The report, Assessing the operation and impact of the childminder sustainability grant, found that Early Years Development and Childcare Partnerships reported a low take-up of the grants, despite publicity.

New SVQ boosts assistant status

Classroom assistants in Scotland will have access to a new qualification aimed at giving them greater professional recognition and improving their further education opportunities, the Scottish Executive said last week. The Scottish Qualifications Authority is to offer Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) at levels two and three to new and existing classroom assistants. Students will study for SVQs at further education colleges, but work in the classroom will count towards them.

Food survey attacks snacks

Children as young as four are eating up to 80 food additives a day, 50 of which are found in snack foods, according to a report by the children's food company, Organix. The report, Carrots or Chemistry? Snacking and child health, published last week, is based on two independent studies and focuses on the snacking habits of children aged four to 11.
