I am a BA Honours Childhood Studies student currently researching racism among pre-school children for my dissertation at Leeds Metropolitan University. I need some information from pre-school practitioners on whether they have witnessed racism in the nursery, and, if so, how they dealt with the situation, and also some information on their teaching approach towards race and racism. If you would like to help me by filling in a questionnaire, please e-mail me at jostirling@yahoo.co.uk. Jo Stirling

Parasols and hoods can be difficult to adjust to the correct angle when you're trying to protect a child from becoming sunburnt while out with the buggy, but the Outlook Shade-A-Babe is specially designed to provide maximum protection while allowing the baby to see out properly and the buggy to be properly ventilated. Outlook Shade-A-Babe was designed by two parents in New Zealand and it can be used in different positions, depending on the age of the child and the degree of sun protection that is needed. The mesh design reduces glare and also functions as a windshield and insect net. The optional UPF50+ sun visor provides a 99 per cent UV block for the upper body and can be used with or without the lower mesh. The shade fits all single prams and buggies and there is a twin version to fit side-by-side buggies. The single version is priced 30; the twin is priced 35 from Cheeky Rascals.

It's at this time of the year when it may become apparent that your outdoor area is not as stimulating and appealing as it might be. There may be neither the time nor the money for a complete renovation but there are some simpler ways in which you can enhance the space and make working and playing outside much more pleasant for children and staff The Mushroom range from Happy Landings would certainly add colour and provide both seating and play opportunities. The mushrooms are made from solid EPDM rubber in a range of bright colours and you can choose whether to have static or spinning versions. The spinning version is 450mm in diameter, with a stalk measuring 400mm, price 126.10. The static version has a variable stalk length ranging from 200mm to 900mm and costs from 82.52. These are permanent fixtures set into a concrete foundation. Happy Landings also supply Stepping Posts which are available in black, green, terracotta or blue. Additional inserts in the form of letters, numbers, arrows or feet can be moulded into the top of each stepping stone. They measure 250mm in diameter and are available in heights ranging from 200mm to 900mm, priced 30.77.

Kathleen Marshall last week announced that her office will consult on issues including child protection, earlier intervention by agencies, drug abuse in family units, teenage pregnancy, health, homelessness and antisocial behaviour.
