At last the national standards for daycare have been published - creeping out into the world in the huge shadow of the general election announcement the same day (see News, page 4). A quick glance past the brightly-coloured covers of the five booklets reveals that little has changed from the draft proposals. A requirement for managers of all settings - full daycare, sessional, creches, and out-of-school clubs - to have two years' experience has been added, however. This is something that our 'Stop the Drop' campaign has called for, and it rules out the prospect of newly-qualified 18-year-olds in charge of nurseries.

The value of learning through play is not as obvious to many parents as it is to professionals. Mary Evans tells how you can help them appreciate this important concept Parents naturally want the best start for their children. But in today's competitive world of league tables and assessments they can all too easily think that the most positive first step on life's ladder of learning is to push their toddlers into a formalised programme of education, rather than letting them progress through play.

Children are very aware of the concept of 'home' from an early age, and as a bridge between home and early years setting, 'my home' makes an excellent topic for the foundation stage. The meaning of 'home' incorporates both the functional - bricks and mortar - and the emotional, provided by family members. There can be great diversity in children's experience of both elements, and as practitioners we need to be mindful of this when planning the topic.

'No other country has such a testing regime. There is increasing evidence of the stress caused to young people who are overly worried about sitting tests. Instead of enjoying learning, they are too preoccupied in making sure they know enough to pass' Professor Colin Richards of St Martin's College, Cumbria, on his study which has found that British schoolchildren are the most tested in the world, The Mirror

Members of a professional association representing under-eights advisors joining Ofsted will not be allowed to make any statements on issues relating to the work of its new Early Years Directorate. Minders challenge Labour on quality

A manifesto for childminders in England was published by the National Childminding Association (NCMA) following the Government's publication of its national standards for daycare and childminding last week. Although the manifesto's stated intention is to outline 'how the next Government should be supporting registered childminding', the NCMA is also using it to contrast its own quality standards with the Government's. While the national standards say childminders in England will be the only daycare providers allowed to smack the children in their care and to smoke in the children's presence with parents' permission, the quality standards state that 'NCMA childminders never slap, smack, shake, bite, frighten or humiliate a child' and they 'ensure a smoke-free environment while they are childminding'.
