Traditional tales are often grisly, but many lend themselves to a topic on homes, and practitioners shouldn't shy away from including them in their project. Such stories have the advantage that children will probably already be familiar with them. Favourites such as 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' offer lots of opportunities for mathematical development. And all offer opportunities to explore strong feelings and emotions.

Embarrassment or fear of being teased is keeping children from taking free school meals, according to research published by the Department of Education and Employment, commissioned by the Child Poverty Action Group. Of the 1.8 million children who are eligible for free school meals, about one child in five fails to claim them. Practical advice for school meal providers includes explaining to parents how to claim free meals, ensuring the value of meal tickets keeps pace with the cost of healthy meals and introducing cashless systems such as swipe cards to help reduce the stigma.

I agree with the findings of the Professional Association of Nursery Nurses (PANN) survey that we nursery nurses are undervalued in the workplace (News, 19 April). Our salaries alone reflect this, especially since we are teaching during the literacy and numeracy hours, but are not treated as professionals in our own right.

A home corner should be a permanent fixture and plenty of resources are readily available It is quite common these days for role-play areas to be developed with great imagination. You name it, we early years practitioners have tried it - and with great benefit to children's learning. But have you noticed how, despite your efforts to create a deep-sea environment with a shipwreck, treasure chest and marine life, the children are often to be found purposefully laying out cups and saucers, berating the dolls for bad behaviour and generally re-enacting domestic life - all from the bottom of the sea!

As more parents are unable to be at home with their children at night, Anne Wiltsher asks who's taking over When nursery owner Melanie Rowley took part in a radio phone-in programme recently, she was asked a question that illustrates the moral panic that overnight care for young children can arouse. I agree that pay in the early years sector is low, but where is the money to come from to improve the situation? As a private day nursery our staff wages are paid for by fee-paying parents. If fees are increased to allow a decent wage, parents just won't be able to afford to send their children to nursery.

Inviting in families to see what they can do with new technology boosts learning at home, says Irene Drummond of Chatham Place Nursery School, Liverpool We were flattered when the new school inspector suggested that our nursery should share good practice and promote information and communication technology (ICT) within the Dingle, Toxteth, Granby Education Action Zone (EAZ). Modestly, we hadn't realised we were good in that area, but decided that holding an ICT Family Fun Day was an ideal opportunity to celebrate the huge input of resources made available to schools through the National Grid for Learning and the EAZ.
