Schools minister Nick Gibb has visited Sheringham Nursery School in London to learn more about the early years.

It was the first visit to an early years setting since the minister took on responsibility for early education and childcare last month.

Mr Gibb said, ‘The years before children begin school are a crucial part of their education, because those who start out behind often find it much harder to catch up with their peers. Good early education can propel children’s development, as well as supporting families to balance work and family life.

‘Over the years, I’ve been struck by the dedication of this country’s early years staff who are giving young children crucial early skills in language and communication, putting them on track to succeed from the earliest opportunity.’
