See what nurseries across the country have been up to.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Children at Busy Bees Nursery at Milton Keynes Hospital celebrated New Year's Eve in style. During the day, the children danced around the nursery chain's own version of 'Big Ben' to Auld Lang Syne and enjoyed a special cocktail made by the nursery chef.

Nature cabin crew Bardney Playgroup in Lincoln used their funding from the Big Lottery Awards to erect a nature cabin to complement their forest school sessions. Playgroup supervisor Hayley Ruane said, 'The children thoroughly enjoy their time in the cabin and have learned new skills by using proper woodworking tools.'

SWIMMING STARS

Children from Active Learning in Dorking, Surrey were awarded swimming badges and certificates after their first term of swimming lessons, held at their local leisure centre. One boy, George, received a badge for swimming five metres, while the rest were awarded their Puffin certificates and badges.

WALKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND

Little Acorns Day Nursery in Gomersal, West Yorkshire took part in the Festival of Winter Walks (22 December 2012-6 January 2013). The aim of the festival, set up by walking charity Ramblers, is to make walking paths safer and encourage people to do more walking. Nursery practitioner Demi Amos, an avid walker, said, 'I enjoyed sharing my passion for the outdoors with the children. We talked about the weather and enjoyed the beautiful local scenery. We even came across some chickens and a turkey.'

READY FOR THE ROAD

Children from Stepping Stones Day Nursery in Nottingham learned the importance of being safe and seen when crossing the road. The setting invited road safety officer Alison Adlington to talk to the children about road safety after they turned their 'pink room' into a street scene with a pedestrian crossing, traffic lights and road signs.

THE PIRATES OF LINGLEY MERE

Stepping Stones Day Nursery in Lingley Mere, Warrington, held a pirate-themed day with children and staff dressing up as pirates and creating their own ships from cardboard boxes.
