ALLERGIES AND ANAPHYLAXIS

ABC MEDICAL SERVICES

• Anaphylactic shock awareness course (EpiPen and AnaPen): two-hour course including basic resuscitation and training in using an EpiPen and AnaPen. Only approved EpiPen instructors teach this course, which is recognised by the Anaphylaxis Campaign.

ACORN CHILDCARE TRAINING

• Allergy and anaphylaxis awareness: one-day course includes handling and preparation of food for chefs, managers and childcarers.

ALLERGY UK

Allergy UK increases understanding and awareness of allergies.

ANAPHYLAXIS CAMPAIGN

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction, but most children affected can be accommodated in early years settings with the correct procedures. The campaign provides information and training courses on how to support children with allergies in schools and early years settings.

FUTUREWORKS

• Allergies, Anaphylaxis and Epi-Pens: this course covers anaphylactic shock, how to store prescribed medications, how to administer medication using an Epi-Pen, and making a setting safe for allergy sufferers.

ASTHMA

ASTHMA UK/NATIONAL ASTHMA CAMPAIGN SCOTLAND

Both charities support people with asthma and those who care for and work with people with asthma.

BEDWETTING

EDUCATION AND RESOURCES FOR IMPROVING CHILDHOOD CONTINENCE (ERIC)

ERIC provides help to children suffering from nocturnal enuresis, the medical term for bedwetting, and the less common problems of daytime wetting. ERIC provides advice on bedwetting, daytime wetting, constipation and incontinence.

• Childhood daytime wetting and soiling - a fundamental course: new seminar presenting up-to-date facts on childhood bowel and bladder disorders.

• Toilet training including children with special needs: exploring the acquisition of bowel and bladder control with particular attention to children with special needs.

BURNS/SCALDS

CHILDREN'S BURNS TRUST

The Trust gives advice on drawing up a co-ordinated and comprehensive burn and scald prevention programme for schools and other child carers, and aims to improve the long-term rehabilitation of child burn victims. It also promotes child safety awareness during Child Safety Week.

Cancer Research UK is the largest volunteer-supported cancer research organisation in the world.

CLEFT LIP

CLEFT LIP AND PALATE ASSOCIATION (CLAPA)

CLAPA provides support for parents, and for people with the condition and their families. There are more than 35 CLAPA groups - all run by volunteers - and many regional contacts across the UK. They provide a specialist service for parents and professionals seeking help in feeding babies with cleft lips and palates.

COELIAC DISEASE

COELIAC UK

Coeliac disease is a condition caused by an inability to digest gluten, which often results in bowel symptoms and failure to gain weight. Coeliac UK provides help to coeliacs and those with dermatitis herpetiformis (an itchy skin rash caused by gluten sensitivity). Publications, including The Gluten Free Food and Drink Directory, can be bought direct from Coeliac UK.

Diabetes UK is the largest organisation in the UK working for people with diabetes.

ECZEMA

NATIONAL ECZEMA SOCIETY

The National Eczema Society gives advice and assistance on lifestyle changes and self-help measures to help keep eczema under control. A school information pack is available.

• Eczema - supporting and managing this misunderstood condition: topics include childhood atopic eczema.

EPILEPSY

ACORN CHILDCARE TRAINING

• Epilepsy awareness: a three-hour course examining epilepsy awareness in childcare settings.

ABC MEDICAL SERVICES

• Epilepsy awareness and rectal diazepam administration: informal course aimed at parents and childcarers responsible for looking after an epileptic child.

NATIONAL SOCIETY FOR EPILEPSY

• Short seminars - include epilepsy awareness: this three-hour course for nurses and carers covers international classification of seizures and their management.

• Customised training: includes a full-day epilepsy course, seminars, conferences and visits.

MENINGITIS TRUST

The Meningitis Trust has produced an extensive range of information to raise awareness of the disease and offers support to people affected by meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia.

PAEDIATRIC CARE

ACTION FOR SICK CHILDREN

Action for Sick Children seeks to ensure that sick children always receive the highest standard of care in hospital, at home and in the community, and that their special needs are taken into account and the whole child is treated - not just the illness or injury. It can provide a parent pack to help parents cope with and prepare for different aspects of children's healthcare, and videos to address fears children may have about hospital.

YORKHILL NHS TRUST

Yorkhill NHS Trust in Glasgow offers advice on the care of a sick child, what to tell children before they go into hospital, supporting children post-operatively and on facing bereavement.

ABC MEDICAL SERVICES

Courses are recognised by Ofsted and meet the requirements of the Childcare Approval Scheme.

• Paediatric emergency aid: sixor 12-hour course designed to give anyone responsible for looking after children the confidence to deal with medical emergencies.

ACORN CHILDCARE TRAINING

• Fire safety: three-hour course to help practitioners be aware of the causes of fire and what to do in the event of fire.

• First-aid in childcare: two-day first-aid course as required by Ofsted for childcare settings.

• Paediatric first-aid: one-day course leading to appointed person status for those working with children.

• Sun safety: two-hour course in safe-sun practice. It looks at skin damage caused by the sun, precautions and policy considerations.

• Healthy eating for under-fives: one-day course on healthy eating for those responsible for the provision of nursery and pre-school meals.

ARMADILLO TRAINING

• Level 2 Award in Food Safety: one-day course held at the workplace. Successful candidates receive a Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) certificate. They also receive a CIEH Food Safety First Principles workbook. The aims are to introduce the essentials of food hygiene and the causes and prevention of food poisoning. This enables settings to meet the requirements of the Food Safety Act and the Food Safety Regulations.There is a short multiple-choice test at the end of the course. Candidates must answer 20 out of 30 questions correctly to gain their certificate.

• Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety: for those working in the food business or for team leaders. It provides a qualification in the principles of food hygiene, with reference to effective supervision.

• First-aid: provides the skills practitioners need to become a first-aider in the workplace. Explains life-saving and first-aid techniques in line with current legislation. Areas covered include alerting the emergency services, resuscitation, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, asphyxia, epilepsy, eye injuries, burns, treatment of a casualty with head injury and accident reporting. To introduce new members of staff or to update existing staff with knowledge of first-aid in the workplace.

• Appointed person: one-day course that provides knowledge of first-aid and provides the employer with an appointed person in line with first-aid regulations. By the end of the course, candidates will be able to identify potentially hazardous situations, alert emergency systems, provide basic first-aid in the workplace and ensure equipment is maintained.

• Paediatric first aid: two-day course ideal for child carers, nursery workers and early years settings. Ofsted approved.

BRITISH RED CROSS

• First-aid for the care of children: UK-wide courses.

BVS TRAINING

• Health and safety: range of training toolkits including DVD or VHS, CD-Roms and lesson plans. Includes 'Promoting the health and hygiene of children' and 'Maintaining the safety and security of children'.

CHILD ACCIDENT PREVENTION TRUST (CAPT)

• Child accident prevention and risk management: the content is designed specifically for each group and covers the provision and maintenance of play facilities, with topics including playground equipment standards, developing maintenance regimes, and achieving an appropriate balance between checking and maintaining equipment.

CHILDCARE CONSULTANCY

• Infection control: providing an understanding of effective infection control practice within a setting.

• Health and nutrition in the early years: how to achieve good practice in promoting healthy eating and ensure the nutritional needs of pre-school children are met.

COMMON THREADS TRAINING

• Introduction to risk assessment: four-hour course.

FOUNDATION FOR THE STUDY OF INFANT DEATHS

The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths promotes information on how to reduce the risk of cot death and supports bereaved families. It is based in London and has eight regional co-ordinators working across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

JACE TRAINING

• Paediatric first-aid: certificated course inspected and controlled by the Health and Safety Executive. The 12-hour course includes lectures and group discussions. Areas covered include the role of the appointed person, health and safety of the early years environment, the first-aid box, emergency procedures, children's accidents and how to record them.

• First-aid at work: four-day practical course, including an examination. Areas covered are similar to the course above. On successful completion, candidates will receive a certificate valid for three years.

• Award in food safety: for all food handlers. Eight hours of tuition deal with food hygiene, bacteriology, personal hygiene, equipment and pest control, cleaning and disinfecting and legislation. The course is regulated by the CIEH.

MATERNITY AND NANNY TRAINING (MNT)

• First-aid course: two-day, in-depth course covering all aspects of first-aid, including dealing with anaphylactic shock.

MARIA MONTESSORI INSTITUTE

• First-aid for childcare workers: two-day course. The emphasis is on gaining confidence to put first-aid into practice. The course meets Ofsted UK requirements and is valid for three years.

ROYAL SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS (RoSPA)

RoSPA is involved in the promotion of safety in all areas of life - work, home, on the roads, in schools, at leisure and on water. Safety posters, signs and videos can be purchased.

ST JOHN AMBULANCE

A St John Ambulance certificate, valid for three years, is issued on a candidate's successful completion of assessment of each of the following courses:

• Early years first-aid: twelve-hour course, recognised for the purpose of registration as an early years professional; can be used to provide evidence for those working towards an NVQ in Children's Care, Learning and Development. Topics include first-aid and national standards for daycare, accident reporting and action planning.

• Emergency life support (child and infant): four-hour course shows how to deal with life-threatening conditions in babies and young children. Topics covered include managing an incident, casualty management, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and choking.

• Emergency aid for appointed persons in schools: topics covered include control of bleeding, resuscitation, incident management, specific hazards in a school and treatment of an unconscious casualty.

SOUTH-EAST ESSEX COLLEGE

• First-aid - early years: two six-hour days. Topics covered include resuscitation and recovery position for babies and children, unconsciousness, shock, bleeding, poisoning, burns and fractures.

TINIES CHILDCARE

• Paediatric first-aid: Ofsted recognised, this 12-hour course is for childcare professionals. The training covers the skills required to save an adult's, child's or baby's life in an emergency.

• CIEH foundation food hygiene: one-day course aimed at any individual who has a responsibility for handling food. There is a 30-question, multiple-choice examination at the end of the day.

• Safeguarding Children: This course will help delegates implement successful child protection procedures and help in developing multi-agency relationships.
