4Children appoints new chief executive

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Imelda Redmond will take over as 4Children’s new chief executive at the beginning of next month.

She replaces the charity’s current chief executive Anne Longfield who has been appointed as the next children’s commissioner for England.

Ms Redmond, who was awarded a CBE in the New Years Honours list 2010 for social care, has worked in the voluntary sector for more than 20 years.

In the 1980s she worked with disabled children before becoming chief executive of Carers UK. She is the current director of public affairs for Marie Curie Cancer Care, as well as chair of the British Gas Energy Trust.

Pip O’Byrne, chair of 4Children, said, ‘I am delighted that Imelda is joining 4Children at such an important time for children and families across the country. She brings a wealth of experience in the charity sector and a record of success in achieving positive change. 4Children has ambitious plans for the future and is thrilled to have Imelda spearheading our work.

‘I want to reiterate my thanks to Anne Longfield, who as chief executive of 4Children for over 20 years has been an inspiring leader. Through her unrelenting commitment to children and families, she has made a real difference to their lives and I know that she will continue to do so in her next role as Children’s Commissioner for England.’

Imelda Redmond said, ‘I am delighted to be joining 4Children, a charity which has achieved so much to deliver services which support communities up and down the country and to advocate for children and families at the heart of Government.

‘But it remains the case that some families are not given the support they need to flourish. 4Children’s aim is to make Britain great for all children and families - as chief executive I will do my utmost to fulfill that goal and I look forward to working with staff and trustees to make it a reality.

‘I want to thank Anne Longfield for her service to 4Children – she has worked tirelessly and effectively and will be a tough act to follow. I cannot think of a better advocate for children’s rights to take on the vital role of Children’s Commissioner for England.’
