Radical proposals for reforming the benefit system include asking single parents of children as young as three to take steps to getting a job.

Lone parents of children aged between three and seven years old would beexpected to start preparing for work, for example, by improving theirskills or addressing significant problems such as debt, drugs or mentalhealth. The proposals are part of a White Paper from the Department ofWork and Pensions (www.dwp.gov.uk).
