In the light of some recent murders and the outcry from the public over the police vetting system involved in the case of Soham school caretaker Ian Huntley, I think it is irresponsible for Ofsted to appear to be prepared to take such a laid-back attitude over people working with children ('Discretion for Ofsted on criminal records', News, 18 March). I also think that it's a joke that some people with police records can work with children, since when dealing with children we have to consider a person's overall character - and this includes their moral standards too.
