Schoolgirls will get boy-free computer zones

* All-girl computer clubs are to be set up in schools in England from this autumn by the Government. The clubs will be aimed at girls aged between eight and 14. The Government hopes they will create a virtual learning environment in which girls can develop their IT skills.

Employment minister Tessa Jowell said, 'Many girls are turned off computers when they are at school because they see computers as boring. But we want to change that attitude.
'We need to offer girls the chance to learn how to use computers to help with homework, as well as how to research their favourite band on the net. Mentors will build on what girls are already into to get them logging on.' Learning and Technology minister Michael Wills added, 'These clubs will help shift the dowdy image that computers have for girls, by making computers relevant to their lives.'
