Gove names first free schools

At the first-ever national Free Schools conference on Saturday, education secretary Michael Gove confirmed eight free schools that have won formal approval to open.

They include the Discovery New School in Crawley, West Sussex, which will run as a Montessori school (News, 22 September 2010).

The other seven are: Stour Valley Community School in Suffolk; ARK Conway, Hammersmith and Fulham; Etz Chaim Jewish primary school, Barnet; The Free School, Norwich; I-Foundation Hindu primary school, Leicester; St Luke's Church of England Primary School, Camden; and Woodpecker Hall, Enfield.
