NW's 'Future of the EYFS' conference goes online

Wednesday, August 19, 2020

Nursery World's conference on the future of the EYFS will now run as a virtual event from 9-11 November, and cost just £99.

'The Future of the EYFS: Rethinking priorities and practice' was originally planned as a physical event on 11 November but is moving online to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants and speakers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sessions will take place over four consecutive days, from Monday 9 to Thursday 12 November, with each session lasting two hours and running from 4.00-6.00pm.

The registration fee of £99 + VAT (£118.80) provides access to all of the sessions, as well as recordings that are accessible on demand and can be viewed in your own time for up to three months after the live event.

The conference will provide an invaluable insight into the latest changes to the EYFS, as well as an introduction to the new EYFS guidance, due to be released in September.

The new framework and guidance aim to improve the quality of care and education for all children, but particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Together, the documents seek to address the current focus on tracking and evidencing ‘next steps’ for every child and instead prioritise:

  • a broad and rich curriculum
  • progression in children’s learning
  • the learning needs of children most in need of support
  • conversation with children and language development
  • self-regulation and executive function, and
  • working with parents and carers.

Lead on the revised guidance, and head teacher of Sheringham Nursery School and Children's Centre, Dr Julian Grenier will provide the keynote address. He will reflect on priorities for the sector and outline starting points for building a broad and balanced curriculum for the children in your setting.

A raft of leading figures within the sector will be providing sessions designed to build your understanding of the changes and how to respond to them within your practice. Sessions include:

  • Penny Tassoni on the place of adult-initiated learning within an early years curriculum, and on delivering high-quality learning for babies and toddlers
  • Jan Dubiel on observation, assessment and planning, and on using STEM as the basis for your curriculum
  • Anne O'Connor on self-regulation
  • Judith Twani on working in partnership with parents
  • Phil Armstrong on cognitive load theory
  • Ben Kingston-Hughes on loose parts.
