ICT contracts signed for primary schools in Northern Ireland

Primary schools in Northern Ireland came a step nearer to having their own computers and back-up support services last week with the signing of two contracts worth 42.6m. The contracts, between the Department for Education and Learning Technology plc, are part of the Classroom 2000 initiative, which will eventually provide primary, secondary and special schools with an ICT managed service, comprising hardware, local and wide area networks. Speaking at Vere Primary School in Belfast, Northern Ireland education minister Martin McGuinness said, 'These contracts represent a major investment in education. Such investment is central to economic progress and to opening opportunities in today's competitive global information economy.'
