A fantastic event for young book fans and their families

Hannah Crown reports back from a day spent at the 2025 Barnes Children’s Literature Festival with her four-year-old son and explains why she is now inspired to ‘tear up the story time rule book at home’.

Nursery rhyme rap and sensory storytelling were key draws for young children at the Barnes children’s literature festival last weekend (21 – 22 June).

The largely volunteer-run festival, which also runs the free London primary schools programme, put on over 100 storytelling events aimed at children aged from 0 upwards, with retellings of old and new favourites through music, performance, bubbles and clay modelling.

Our day kicked off with a show from nursery rhyme rapper MC Grammar, whose unique meshing of hip hop and kids books has garnered him a huge YouTube following (his rap of the Gruffalo has received 5m views), a show on Sky TV and plaudits from the likes of Michael Rosen.
