New nanny register created to raise standards and improve safety

A national nanny register has been launched to raise standards, improve safety and provide ‘long-overdue’ recognition to the UK’s unregulated nanny sector.

The National Nanny Association (NNA) is behind the launch of the voluntary register, which is backed by MP for Keighley and Ilkley, Robbie Moore.

Currently nannies are not required to register with Ofsted, unlike other early years settings. There is also no legal requirement for anyone working in home-based roles and with children to have an enhanced DBS check, which the NNA believes puts families and children in a vulnerable position. Those who are self-employed are also unable to obtain an enhanced DBS check at the moment.

The register forms part of the NNA’s work through its Road to Nanny Regulation campaign, which advocates for the safety, wellbeing and development of children across the UK.
