Why we're here

I must say that I agree with Ian Everitt's comments (Letters, 11 July). As childcarers we should get better pay for the work we do and it would be great to see more men working in childcare. I agree with Mr Everitt when he says that men won't earn enough to be the main breadwinner and that things should change across the board. But my point was that we go into childcare knowing that it is both undervalued and underpaid. I began working in a pre-school because it fitted in with my family and I had the same holidays as them. I would say this is how most people with families start.

I agree with Mr Everitt when he says that you cannot get by on just the love of the job. The Government knows our dedication to children will keep some of us in childcare, but many more are leaving the profession because the pros don't outweigh the cons.
