The Kids' Cookery School

The Kids' Cookery School has beaten more than 400 other entrants to win a 5,000 prize. The Acton, west London-based school, which gives children aged three to 16 a chance to learn about food and to gain basic practical cookery skills, received the award at the Guardian Charity Awards 2002 last week. Almost 4,000 boys and girls have learned the basics of healthy eating at the school since it was founded in 1998. Fiona Hamilton-Fairley, its principal and chief executive, said she was 'absolutely delighted' to have won the award, and that the school would use the prize money to fund classes for 60 new students aged 11 to 14 from local high schools, who are at risk of social exclusion.
