Switched on

Another way of ensuring children get a sound sleep could be by installing a smoke alarm that you're not tempted to pull the batteries out of when you're cooking. The FireAngel smoke alarm plugs into a household light fitting between the socket and the bulb, runs off mains electricity and charges up whenever the light is switched on. This means it can also be flicked off at the switch if it sounds when you burn the toast. After a false alarm you won't need to climb up to reset or test the device, but just flick the switch again. The FireAngel sells for under 20 at stores including B&Q, Homebase, Woolworth's, Waitrose, Curry's and John Lewis. Or you can phone the company, which was the official partner in the Government's fire safety awareness campaign, 'Make a plan, get out alive' last month, on 024 7623 6600.
