Play dough

Malleable materials such as play dough offer rich opportunities for promoting scientific learning (see page 21). To make play dough, you will need: Ingredients *2 cups plain flour *2 cups water *1 cup salt *2 tablespoons cooking oil *2 teaspoons cream of tartar 3A few drops of food colouring Method

* Put all the ingredients in a large bowl and stir them.

* Place the mixture in a non-stick pan over a moderate heat and keep stirring. The mixture will look very lumpy, but don't worry - as it comes to boiling point, it will begin to resemble dough.

* When the mixture forms a ball, remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool for a while.

* Knead the dough until smooth.
