- Back to the future
The Early Years Childcare chain, which has ten nurseries in Sussex andthe south-east, took a 1980s theme to celebrate its 20th anniversary atthe chain's annual garden party at the flagship nursery in Hove. Staffmembers and families dressed up in 1980s disco gear for dancing, andstaff were also presented with awards by Brighton and Hove mayorCouncillor Ann Norman, who also helped Early Years Childcare's directorDavid Wiltshire cut a specially made anniversary cake.

Children at Midland Road Nursery School and Children's Centre inBradford, West Yorkshire, have been enjoying some quiet time and gettingstuck into a book. Daycare co-ordinator Sandra Walker said, 'Thisphotograph was taken outdoors while some of the two-year-olds werelooking at books.'

Bents Farm Day Nursery in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, has had itsoutdoor area transformed thanks to capital funding from the localauthority and from provider of children's playground equipmentPlayforce. To mark the launch of the new outdoor area, the nursery isinviting families and the community to an open weekend on 5 and 6September.

To celebrate their setting's first summer, staff at Ash Grange SureStart Children's Centre in Aldershot, Hampshire, invited the Cuddle MeDo Farm for a visit. Educators from the mobile farm told the childrenall about different animals and how to care for them. The children'scentre also invited families to come in and learn about how to cook on abudget, making pizzas and summer pudding.

Sure Start North Moor and Sure Start Northern Villages Children'sCentres in Newcastle Upon Tyne have been holding a series ofbeach-themed holiday activities for children under five and theirfamilies. They were invited to Tynemouth beach to make sandcastles andswim in the sea, and for the families who couldn't make the trip, staffbrought the beach to them inland, with water to splash and sand forchildren to dig in.

Children at Kaleidoscope Acorn Nursery in York struggled to carry a4.4kg marrow grown in their vegetable garden. Parents brought in acollection of marrow recipes to try out in the nursery kitchen and toencourage children to eat the fruits of their labours. The children alsomade a soup using carrots, beans, spring onions, broccoli and potatoesgrown in the garden.
