Never too young for football skills

Three- and four-year-olds at Ardgowan nursery in Paisley have been keeping their eye on the ball in a series of sessions introducing them to the beautiful game. Nursery owner Patricia Gourley said, 'David Longwell, the youth coach from St Mirren's Football Club, comes in once a week and spends half an hour with the three-year-olds and half an hour with the four-year-olds. The coach has never done it with children this young, but he says the kids are brilliant and now they're joining weekend classes and taking it up as a hobby.

'We want them to have fun and be sociable and learn how to win and how to lose. It's good for both girls and boys.'

The nursery has also brought in outside experts to work with the children on other forms of physical exercise that the nursery staff may not feel confident about, introducing a yoga teacher and a tennis coach. Ms Gourley said, 'Nursery nurses are great at physical development, but they may not be footballers!'
