Grants totalling 330,000 have been paid out to almost 450 nurseries, schools, libraries and youth groups across Scotland under the Scottish Executive's home reading initiative small grants scheme, which aims to provide access to home reading materials to as many children in Scotland as possible. The majority of the grants were used by local organisations to buy books. Deputy education minister Peter Peacock said, 'Equipping children with vital reading skills will give them a great start in life.'
