Free school meals expanded to all families on Universal Credit

All children in families claiming Universal Credit are to receive free school meals from September, under new plans by the Government to give children the best start in life following its decision to postpone publication of its Child Poverty Strategy.

Making the announcement last night, the Government says the expansion of free schools meals will benefit over half a million children, lift 100,000 out of poverty, and mean parents are £500 better off.

It forms part of its Plan for Change to break down barriers to opportunity and give children the best start in life.

The announcement follows the move by the Government to postpone publication of its Child Poverty Strategy from this month until the Autumn.

Early years organisations, teaching unions and children’s charities have welcomed the move, as has the Liberal Democrats that has been campaigning for free school meals to be expanded to all children in poverty.
